Local SEO that wins the map pack, not just the blue links

Local search for Australian businesses. Google Business Profile, Local Pack and Maps visibility, reviews, citations, and service-area content, reported on the calls and enquiries it produces.

How does local SEO work?

A local search returns three surfaces at once: the Local Pack and Maps, the organic results beneath it, and increasingly an AI answer above both. Each is ranked differently, and winning one does not win the others. Local SEO covers:

  • Google Business Profile: the primary category, service list, attributes, hours and photos that decide which local searches you are eligible for at all.

  • Local Pack and Maps ranking: the relevance, distance and prominence signals Google names as its local ranking factors, worked deliberately rather than left to chance.

  • Reviews and citations: a repeatable way to ask for reviews, and consistent name, address and phone data across the directories Google cross-checks.

  • Service-area content: genuinely distinct pages for the services and areas you actually serve, written to stay clear of the thin doorway-page pattern Google demotes.

Typical Timeline

Google Business Profile corrections often move Local Pack visibility within 2-4 weeks. Citations propagate at third-party speed. Service-area content and review volume compound, usually showing in rankings and enquiries across 3-6 months.

Why local SEO stalls for most businesses

Four failures account for most of what we find on a first local audit. None of them are exotic.

  • The Profile Is Claimed, Then Abandoned

A verified Google Business Profile with the wrong primary category, an incomplete service list and no Posts turns up on most local audits we run. Category alone changes which searches a business is eligible to appear for.

  • Reviews Are Left To Chance

Google names review count and rating as a prominence signal, and buyers read them before they call. Without a routine for asking, review flow tracks whoever happened to be annoyed enough to write one.

  • Citations Quietly Disagree

An old suite number, a disconnected landline or a pre-rebrand trading name still sitting on directories undercuts the consistency Google uses to confirm you are one real business at one real address.

  • Suburb Pages Are Spun, Not Written

Fifty near-identical pages with the suburb name swapped is a long-standing shortcut, and Google classifies it as doorway content. It wastes crawl budget and risks the rankings it was meant to win.

How we approach local search

Local visibility is won on your Google Business Profile as much as on your website. We treat both as the job.

Three Surfaces, Worked Separately

The Local Pack, the organic results below it, and the AI answer above it are ranked by different signals. We work all three rather than assuming a win on one carries to the others.

Profile Treated As Infrastructure

Categories, services, attributes, hours, products and Posts kept current and complete, because the profile is the asset that decides local eligibility before your website is considered.

A Review Routine That Holds

A repeatable request process built into how you already finish jobs, with responses to every review. No incentives, no gating, nothing that breaches Google review policy.

Citations Audited And Corrected

One source of truth for your name, address and phone, reconciled across the Australian directories and data aggregators that feed Google, then re-checked rather than set and forgotten.

Service-Area Pages Worth Indexing

Pages built only where there is something real to say, with local proof, genuine service detail and internal links, so they read as content rather than as a template with a suburb variable.

Reported On Enquiries, Not Map Pins

Google Business Profile calls, direction requests and website clicks tracked alongside organic enquiries, so you can see what local visibility actually produced.

Common questions about local SEO

Local SEO is the work of making a business visible to nearby searchers across the Google Local Pack, Google Maps, and the organic results for location-qualified queries such as "electrician Fremantle" or "accountant near me". It covers your Google Business Profile, reviews, citation consistency, and local content on your own website. It differs from general SEO mainly in that a large share of the ranking signal sits on your Google Business Profile rather than on your site.
This page describes a service: the local search discipline, delivered for businesses anywhere in Australia. The Perth and Sydney pages describe where we work from and who we work with in those markets, and cover full SEO rather than local search specifically. If you want local visibility and you are not in Perth or Sydney, this is the right page. If you are in Perth or Sydney and want a sense of our presence in your market, start on the city page.
Google Business Profile corrections are the fastest-moving part: a wrong primary category or an incomplete service list can change Local Pack visibility within two to four weeks of being fixed. Citation corrections propagate more slowly because they depend on third-party directories updating. Service-area content and review volume compound, and typically show in rankings and enquiry numbers across three to six months. Anyone promising a Local Pack position by a fixed date is guessing.
No. The Local Pack shows three results and the ranking is partly a function of where the searcher is standing, so the same business can appear for someone two suburbs away and not for someone across town. No provider controls that, and any guarantee of a fixed Local Pack position should be treated as a warning sign. What we commit to is the work, transparent reporting on calls, direction requests and enquiries, and honest reporting when something is not working.
For the Local Pack, it is difficult: proximity to the searcher is one of the three factors Google names, and a service-area business is ranked from its registered location. You can improve this by building genuine relevance and prominence for those areas, but it is not a substitute for being nearby. The organic results below the Local Pack have no proximity constraint, which is where well-written service-area pages earn their place. We will tell you which of your target suburbs are realistic before writing a page for each one.
Only where there is something genuinely different to say. Google classifies near-duplicate pages generated for many locations as doorway pages, and they can harm a site rather than help it. We would rather publish eight substantial service-area pages with real local detail, distinct services and proper internal linking than eighty templated ones. If your service area is wide and uniform, a strong service page plus a well-optimised profile usually outperforms the page-per-suburb approach.
We build a review request routine into how your team already finishes a job, write response templates, and keep responses current. We do not offer incentives for reviews, do not filter or gate requests so only happy customers are asked, and do not buy reviews. All three breach Google review policy and risk the profile. Review velocity from real customers is slower, and it is the only version that holds up.
Buttercup SEO engagements start from $800 per month, and local SEO is delivered within that rather than as a separate line item. What changes the number is scope: a single-location business with one service area sits at the lower end, while a multi-location business needing profile management, citation work and service-area content across several markets costs more. We quote against the audit rather than against a package, and there are no long-term contracts.
